LOOT LOOT

by Joe Orton

Black farce

Production of Kruševačko pozorište (Teheater of Kruševac)

Premiere: June 2024 at Kruševačko pozorište

The first West End success of the iconic British playwright Joe Orton has everything I love in theater: humor with just the right touch of social critique; playfulness that borders with anarchy; absurd that stems from the inner (a)logic of the play.
The opening situation seems solemn and serious: a small family just lost their mother and wife. But beneath the superfluous mourning it is greed accompanied with lust and cynicism that pushes the action towards absurdity. The laughter exponentially grows as the situation gets more and more out of control. The meta-theatrical elements decompose the naturalistic setting playfully. This makes the audience more involved and bridges the distance between them and the stage.
The biggest Yugoslavian and Serbian comedy actors come from Kruševac, so it is a city with it's own strong comediography tradition. It was a great pleasure to find the connecting points between the local and British humor.
