The performance “Spirit is our homeland” is a biopic of the internationally renowned writer Danilo Kiš.
He lost his Jewish father in Aushwitz during Second World War childhood, and his mother died a few years later. His way to literary success was quick but filled with controversy, and his death came very early. We perform his life with words and situations from his books, letters and interviews. As Kiš himself would say: a writer's only destiny is the one told in his books.
Danilo Kiš spent his life in Serbia (which was then Yugoslavia), Hungary and France, so his vivid and authentic personality embeds multiple cultures, multiple languages. At the same time he is a child of Balkans and a man of the world, a true European and cosmopolite. Therefore his story is told in two languages - Serbian and Hungarian.
This is a story of Danilo Kiš - a man who feels the same responsibility towards the truth in his literature and the truth in his life; an artist who is aware of the lyrical power and political impotence of arts. His story is told in a postdramatic manner in which different levels of reality intertwine.
